Sometimes, you find yourself in a situation where you can’t move forward and you don’t want to use the expression, “I promise to do.” You would rather use the expression, “I’ll try to do”, because you’re afraid to commit yourself or you would find it difficult to live up to your promise.
Now, it’s interesting that experience has shown that when a person makes a promise to do something, this very promise gives them the strength to carry it, without hesitation and with greater ease. Whereas, one does not commit herself or herself, promising only to try, or to do one’s best, and when the matter comes up and there’s a temptation not to do it, that person is most likely to fail, saying to themselves that after all, they didn’t “promise to do it.” They only said they would try and therefore, they’re not breaking their word and their conscience doesn’t bother them.
