It is told about a gentleman whose name is Dick Fosbury, he was a high jumper, but instead of facing the pole in jumping with the feet first, somehow, he got the idea that he needed to throw his body over his head first with his face looking at the sky, and he said that, “I was told over and over again that I would never be successful and that this technique would never work.”
He was quoted in saying that and in fact, he was so criticized that the position got his name, “The Fosbury Flop”, but interestingly enough, despite the ridicule, Fosbury trusted that he was on to something that was unique and he kept at it. Then soon enough, at the Olympics in Mexico in 1968, the laughter stopped and Fosbury not only won the gold medal with his flop but he set a new world record, and today, believe it or not, all high jumpers use this technique and this is how a new concept was born.
