Many people believe procrastination is putting off or delaying something which requires attention. Procrastination however is more than that. It means that you never get “started” or that you’re unable to “finish”. But you must understand that the fundamental basis for procrastination is the lack of discipline. Discipline is a certain control that one cultivates as a method to accomplish particular goals. Discipline demands control, restraint, practice, preparation and self-mastery. Hence, here lies the challenging issue. Most people do not like to be subordinate to a higher calling even if this calling comes from their own mind. They say it limits their ability to express themselves and live a “free life”. What they do not understand however is that by restraining their inner will, they can cultivate a regiment of orderliness in their daily lives which will actually give them complete power over their will. Thus true freedom. This will in turn, allow them to get anything they wish completed.
Here are five steps to take to limit procrastination:
- Stop blaming or making excuses.
Accept responsibility for the tasks that you do not start, or you neglected to complete. Just admit it, for once and for all. Then realize that you are at fault and no one else!
- Break it down
If a project or a task seems overwhelming, break it down into smaller assignments. Then spread out these undertakings into sections and then start and finish one at a time.
- Monitor your progress
Review your daily tasks and record your successes and failures. Don’t confuse movement with accomplishments. Be honest about your advancement. After all this is your life.
- Help another with their tasks.
Assisting another start or complete their goal will boost your ego and help you better understand your own shortcomings. By teaching another what must be done, your own mind will realize the importance of the journey and the need to make changes. This will boost your ambition to succeed and create fuel for change.
- Never give up.
Once you develop your course of meliorating your life stay on it. Keep the progression steady and the pace at a constant rate.
Remember that life expects us to do measurable progress in reasonable time. To lead an exclusive lifestyle, you must figure out ways to live uniquely. It is an art, a study, a practice, and awareness. You can do it and you deserve it.
