Daily Wisdom – Motivational Podcast – Day 74 – Inspiration: Above and Beyond
There is a story told about a man who went to the leader of the city complaining, and he said, “Someone else on the other side of town opened up a new business, exactly the same as mine and it will destroy my business,” and he was quite upset.
The man, who actually owned a large part of the city, looked at him and said, “Why would you be worried?”
He responded, “Well, this competition is going to kill my business. What will I be doing?”
The wise man said to him, “This is not what it is. Let me tell you a story. You see, when a horse comes down to eat or drink, he goes to a river or a stream, and in wanting to drink from the river, he looks down by bending its head and before drinking, he actually kicks the water. Do you know why?”
The man answered, “I don’t.”
He says, “Well, I’ll tell you why the horse kicks the water. He kicks it because the horse thinks that the face that it sees in the water, is someone else’s, and the horse gets upset and says, ‘How could it be taking my space? This other horse doesn’t belong here’,” and so he kicks it and the water becomes muggy and all this mud that moves around, even though it becomes totally superfluous, at this moment, the horse believes that now the other horse left and now he can drink.”
Now you see, this is the psychology of the horse. But the horse made three mistakes. One is the horse did not have a competition. It was actually itself and its own reflection that it was looking at, so why would it be upset? Second, by kicking the water, the horse made it become very muddy and the mud itself now became sandy; and this is the water that it drank. Third, there’s enough water for everyone in the river. Most jealousy is all about this. To be jealous doesn’t make anybody successful. It eats you alive.
If someone else opens up a business down the road from you or if you find someone else has a similar idea, or if you are in relationship with someone and you are jealous, think of what I just wrote. There’s no need to be jealous. Love the person unconditionally and be sure of who you are and what you’ve got, otherwise jealousy will eat you alive and will not let you breathe or be happy for no other reason. There’s no need for you to suffer.
