Interdependence

People in the world, at least some of them, believe that they are on their own, they can do pretty much what they want at any time anywhere and they don’t have to care or be part of anybody else’s world except their own.

Let me just suggest something to you and that is called interdependence. You see, interdependence means that everyone has something that you don’t have. There is someone out there who has a talent or something they have that you can benefit from, and the same is with you. You have talents and an amazing opportunity to share with others all the things that you were blessed with. Each and every one of us grows up with certain type of experiences that we learn and concepts that we develop. We become different people and everything that we have is to be shared with others. Interdependence means that we need each other to make this world a better place to be. Interdependence does not mean that we cannot be by ourselves or act by ourselves. It just means that what we have can be enhanced by others when we share it; this is called enlightened self interest.

Enlightened self interest means that you wish to benefit others at the service of others, not at the expense, help other people see themselves greater than they are and benefit from everything that you have to share with them, and help them get what they need and you’ll have everything you want, but at the benefit of others, not at the expense. That’s what interdependence means. Some people may say, “I don’t want to be dependent on others at any time,” but we don’t live this way. Who lives in an island by themselves all their lives and sees no one, says nothing, and goes nowhere? That doesn’t exist. There may have been perhaps one or two individuals in all since life’s existence that have done that. Most of us live in cities, even rural areas, but places where there are other people, and we meet others, we work among each other, we help one another. Many of us also have families: brothers, sisters, children, parents, so we have to deal with people. We have to interact. The world is all about interdependence but interdependence is not negative. Interdependence is not taking away your freedom. Interdependence is not what it sounds like that you cannot be with others if you are by yourselve.

No, that’s not what it means. You could be with others and you can be by yourself. As a matter of fact, there are times when even though you may be many people, in a throne of crowds, but yet you feel lonely. That doesn’t mean that you’re by yourself; it just means that at times, a person needs to reflect upon their life and decide where they are and take a vision of where they would like to be.

So being dependent of each other is a good thing because everyone has something to share. Every single individual has something that you and I need, and that’s the beauty of life, the beauty of our universe, that we could share everything that we’ve got with each other and benefit at the service of each other, not at the expense.
