Daily Wisdom – Motivational Podcast – Day 578 – Inspiration: Above and Beyond
There is a story about two men who met. One is an expert diamond jeweler, the other one was a wise man, and they sat together as they were discussing different aspects of life. Now, the wise man was a great philosopher and had a great understanding of life.
The diamond jeweler, actually, the expert asked the man who was sitting next to him, the wise man, and he said, “There are people in this world who are not very bright and they don’t have a lot to offer the world. Why were they created? Why are they here?” and so the wise man thought about it and said, “That’s interesting. Why would you say that?” He said, “Well, I see a lot of people sometimes who are not bright and I’m just wondering, what is their purpose in this world.”
So the wise man look at him and said, “Do you have some of the diamonds with you that you sell?” and the diamond expert said, “As a matter of fact, I do.” So he pulled out of his pocket a handkerchief and in it were several diamonds of all kinds of beauties.
So the wise man asked the expert, “My goodness, these are all so different from one another,” and so the expert, at that moment, took one of the diamonds which was a lot smaller than all the others, and he said, “You see this one, this is the most exquisite and expensive diamond that I have.” Interestingly enough, the wise man looks at the rest of the diamonds that he had in this rolled up cloth, and said, “Well, what about this one?” And then the wise man proceeded to pick another diamond which was much larger.
Now, the expert at that time said, “No, no, my friend, you don’t understand. This diamond is not as precious as the one I have showed you. I’m an expert, I know,” and at that moment, this wise man looked at the diamond expert, and said, “You see, you have to have a keen eye and to be an expert in order to tell which diamond is indeed worth more than the other even though they all have a certain amount of worth,” and so that’s what it takes to see people.
If you look at people, at the outside, we might not see their worth. We might not see the type of person or individual that they are. We might not understand their character and one might only see their flaws, not noticing also that they are perhaps like a diamond in the rough. It may need to be polished, it may need to be worked on, perhaps even cut, whatever the case maybe. At this time, the diamond expert understood that indeed, people are all diamonds. Each and every human being is a diamond. Some may need to be polished, some may need to be cut, but only to shine more, not to be any different. Each and every person matters and that’s the beauty an expert can see.
