At times, we do things which we know are improper, either in our eyes or in the eyes of society, or sometimes, for some of us, we believe in the eyes of G-d.

So what should we do when we feel remorse about something which should not have done? What’s the point of vocalizing our thoughts of remorse to anyone, for that matter? Aren’t the thoughts and the feelings that are deep within us or within the deep recesses of our minds and the parts of our hearts revealed before us? We know what we’ve done. We know what it is.

Well, for one reason is, the declaration of one’s feeling that we take seriously when they are spoken, makes it real that we realize what we’ve done. So by expressing it, vocalizing it, we feel the remorse and we understand what we’ve done. It doesn’t mean we dwell on it; it just means we express it.

It also serves not only to reveal and reinforce our inner thoughts, but also to intensify them because spoken human emotions run faster and thicker when they are expressed, it is just as simple as that.

Now, it’s just almost like anger management. There was a tip that was given by a wise man saying “During an angry time, keep silent.” That’s basically the best advice that you could ever engender.

The spoken words, add fuel to the fire of feeling negative or positive, whichever way, and venting to a friend in the heat of anger exacerbates rather than eliminates the negative feelings, so the best way is to keep silent.

In fact, no matter how critical or objective we try to be with ourselves, at times, we are blinded by self-love. According to one of the wisest men in the world, King Solomon, who said that “it prevents us because of the self-love from seeing our shortcomings.”

What we do as we go about our life viewing ourselves from the inside through speaking of our shortcomings, we understand the remorse and we step into this other person and realize that what we’ve done was wrong. Now, we don’t need anyone else to listen to that or a person to absolve us, or anything like this, but we do need to acknowledge to ourselves that what was done, was a moment of folly.

During that moment of folly, we stepped beyond our boundaries and we feel remorse, so confessing to what you’ve done to yourself out loud can help you with the remorse and can help you get rid of the feeling of the things that you did that was not appropriate, and you’ll feel so much better.
