Daily Wisdom – Motivational Podcast – Day 569 – Inspiration: Above and Beyond
Have you heard of people saying, “This is killing me. My blood pressure is through the roof. I can’t handle it anymore”? These are signs of stress that could be quite detrimental. Now, I’m not sure whether or not there are any research into the physiological effects of patience but there are many studies on the effects of impatience, particularly stress and anger.
See, research demonstrates that angry people are one and half times more likely to get cancer then others and have a 4 to 5 times higher risk of having heart disease. Isn’t that interesting? Also, that the biological effects of anger and stress include increased heart rate, surging blood pressure, production of more stomach acid, whether you suppress or express your feelings? Why would anyone do that? And interestingly enough, if you do vent and you let out this anger, your brain gets even more worked up and sends the stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, surging right through your bloodstream to prepare you to fight. This, the scientists have found have the effect of weakening your immune system particularly your T cells which are the body’s main infection fighters. The muscles contract, the blood vessels constrict, and your heart has to work harder to circulate your blood. That’s why you have the sensation of a pounding heart. However, on the opposite aspect, when you’re calm, your fight or flight system turns off. Your muscles relax, your blood vessels dilate, your blood pressure drops, and your heart rate slows down. Your immune system functions well and it produces the requisite number of T cells which ward off the disease and help you live a longer, healthier life. Why wouldn’t you use that?
You see, biography or biology is the signature of your life. Who you are will decide on your biology the person that you are by acting a certain way, will describe the type of human being, from a biological standpoint, that you will be. Why work with that? The fight or flight response is an important one for survival and it helps us run away from danger, for instance; but it is designed for short bursts, not to be chronically owned, not to constantly take out fires, not to constantly be worried and running around, and looking for ways to escape stress. Given our current lifestyles, we could be experiencing fight or flights almost all of the time – in traffic, under tight work schedule, or in disagreement with someone we have relationship with. Why not cultivate the attitude of patience? It’s one of the best things that you can do for your health. The more you can easily roll with the punches of life, tolerate the obstacles and the tests, and all of these functions that are coming to you, the less stress you will experience, even if it means to spend one less day if you have to at work or perhaps be late at a meeting. It’s okay, it’s about your biology; so fix your biography.
