Daily Wisdom – Motivational Podcast – Day 881 – Inspiration: Above and Beyond
There is a story about a writer by the name of Flannery O’Connor. She battled lupus, a terrible disease, but wrote about her life, and then she died unfortunately, at the young age of 39 years old. Now, at one point in time she was asked, “Why is it that you are writing in spite of your illness?” And she said, “Because I’m good at it.”
You know, it’s interesting. If you think about that, she battled her sickness but what she was good at, she used as an incentive to become better. It was an enticement for her to make things better.
When you use your own talent, you feel like you are invincible; you could do anything you want. Don’t take your talents for granted. Take them and use them for the best of your abilities. Not only should you not envy others but, you should envy yourself for what you’ve got.
Years ago, when I was in private practice. I only treated one patient at a time. I didn’t treat many patients. I just treated one at a time, and then I became a public speaker. It then occurred to me. How would I be able to do that? How am I going to speak in front of hundreds of people when all I have done for many years is speak just to one patient at a time? Would I be able to handle this? And the truth is, somebody said to me, “You’re a good speaker. You should use your talent.”
That memory of that compliment has stayed with me all those years, and today, thousands of people have attended my seminars, thousands of people have listened to my daily podcasts, so I am proud of that. If I can do it, of course you can do it. You see, a writer once said, “Success depends more on how you develop your talents, than on how many talents you have.”
John Marks Templeton wrote “Am I doing the thing that I am best qualified to do?” That is the question that he advised everyone to ask. You should ask that question of yourself: are you doing the thing that you are best qualified to do? Now, that doesn’t mean that I was not a good doctor. I practiced and I actually had a very successful practice but here’s what it means: I had a talent and I wanted to develop it, but I wasn’t sure that it was even there. Someone pointed it out to me and today, years later, we see how this talent has become so magnified. That’s what you have to do. The more that you cultivate and you work on your full powers, the abilities that you have, the more you’ll feel that life is worth living and every part of it will make you happier. That’s a guarantee. You should try it and you’ll see.
