Daily Wisdom – Motivational Podcast – Day 539 – Inspiration: Above and Beyond
Maimonides who lived in the 11th century was a physician, exceptional scholar and philosopher. He has written a book of conducts, about a proper way to live. I’d like to share some of his ideas with you.
He wrote that a person should never shout, not shriek while speaking. A person should not raise their voice excessively but they should speak gently to all people. One should care at all time not to stand at a distance so that his speech does it appear haughty. Now, he should also greet all men before they greet him and so that they are pleased with him. He should judge everyone in a good light, speak favorably of all his fellow men, never mentioning anything that is shameful to him, and should love peace and pursue it. If he sees that his words would be effective and will be given attention, then he should speak. If not, he should keep silent. What does that imply? Not try to placate a man or his anger, or try to convince everyone that he is right. He shouldn’t question a man about a vow that he makes, especially at the time that he’s making it, but he should wait until the other person’s mind is tranquil and calm. He shouldn’t look at his fellow in the moment of humiliation, but he should turn his attention away. He shouldn’t also distort facts, exaggerate a situation or minimize it except in the interest of peace. The guiding rule is that he should speak only words of goodness and in connection with acts of kindness. Also, at all times, he should cast his eyes downward so that he walks with humility. His clothing should be attractive and clean. He should always pay attention to what he drinks, what he eats, and he should provide his household in accordance with his funds and the way of success without ever taxing himself. Now, this is quite important and he wrote that a man should always eat less than befits his income, dress as befits his income, and provide his spouse and the children beyond what befits his income. The reason for this is that the mark of a thoughtful approach to life is the arrangement of one’s priorities in the proper order. In this case, he puts his family first. One should also establish an occupation with how he could support himself, an occupation which is with honesty. He should do everything according to goodness with integrity. The rule is that he should aim to improve his financial position and to change the impermanent with the permanent. His business dealings should always deal with honesty and good faith, and when his answer, he says no, he should mean that, and if he says yes, he should mean that.
