Daily Wisdom – Motivational Podcast – Day 509 – Inspiration: Above and Beyond
I recently read that Thomas Edison invented so many different things: the stock ticker, the automatic telegraph, the electric safety miner’s lamp that they wear, the fluorescent lights and the motion picture camera, even the electric vote recorder. Quite amazing.
Now, if you read about this, it says that he was struggling with the light bulb. For whatever reason, he was not able to succeed and this is what he said: “I have not failed 700 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 700 ways will not work, but when I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.” This is called “succeeding by elimination”.
This is the opportunity about the fact that he took the time to find a way that would make it work and rather than looking at what he failed or the amount of times that he failed, he focused on the times that he succeeded, even if it was just one.
Just like wine, with age, it gets better. It’s quite amazing. The same thing here. In order to make sure the person succeeds at what they want to do or their projects, or something they strive towards, they have to continuously work towards that project. It’s not guaranteed that they will win or that they will find the full solution, but one thing is for sure, every effort exerted towards that goal will get them closer to where they need to be, and if it still fails, it just means they have to try one more time.
Succeeding by elimination means that at any given time, we have the opportunity as human beings to use the best of our abilities and not focus on the times that we fail but on the one or two times that we will succeed. This accumulation of all these failures amounts to that one time success and that’s what we want and that is what we look for, and it can be done.
So, I strongly suggest that rather than thinking that you are a failure or that you have not achieved what you wanted in your goals, just try again. Don’t give up on your dreams, don’t give up on your ideas and your idealism, focus on what you want to accomplish, keep up the work and try again.
This is true for all the attributes: patience, anger, habits, whatever it is that you want to work on, keep working at it and keep working at it. It doesn’t matter how many times you failed. Look at the fact that one of those times will be the winning ticket, just like a lottery, but you will win at the end, and that’s what matters after all.
