Daily Wisdom – Motivational Podcast – Day 825 – Inspiration: Above and Beyond
My father, bless his soul, passed away many years ago, but I still remember many of the lessons that he taught me while he was still alive. One such lesson was when he once came to visit me.
He asked me, “Son, what are you doing these days?”
I answered, “Well, I’m working hard and, thank G-d, family is growing. Things are doing so much better, and have improved a lot of things in the business.”
He looked at me and asked me the same question again. “Now but what are you doing these days?”
I was somewhat puzzled, and I gave the same answer. And one more time, he asked me again, “What are you doing these days?”
I said, “But father, I just answered that question.”
He said, “No. I’m not asking you what you’re doing about the money that you’re making. That is none of your doing. That G-d blesses you with that money.
You just have to be a vessel for that. I’m asking you what are you doing?
What about the good deeds, which are wholly your own? Do you give charity to others?
Do you do kind things to other people, to your fellow men?
Do you devote a certain amount of time to learn and become better so that you can share it with others?
These are the things in this world which are truly your own possession. And that you can accomplish only through your own efforts. I’m asking you what you are doing, not what G-d is doing for you.”
It left an indelible impression in my life. I realize that it is true, going to work every day is not what I am doing, it’s how I am working. It’s not so much what I am doing at work, it’s who am I becoming at work?
How do I treat my fellow workers and colleagues?
Are my business schedules done according to the right things so that I can maximize my time?
Are my meetings dealt with honesty and integrity? Are the things that I say when I promote a product and or services, are they done with conscientious effort to help the others?
Do I share all of what I have with other people that have less than me?
That’s the question. This is a question that I asked of myself every day since I’ve heard it from him, and I thank him for that. I will always remember this. I thought sharing it with you for your day might appreciate it so you can do it as well.
