There is a story about a philosopher named Ludwig Wittgenstein. He discovered that when you put a fly in a bottle, it dives right to the bottom and then it flies back up to about the middle of it and then it starts flying to the left and hits the wall, and then it flies to the right and hits the wall again, and then it goes back and flies to the left and hits the wall, and flies to the right and hits the wall. The fly keeps flying back and forth from the left to the right, until it just drops from exhaustion. It’s just simply exhausted and it falls, and it dies.
One thing the fly never does, he says, is look up. If that fly ever looked up, it would have seen that there was an opportunity to get out, just fly away and be free. Often, we find ourselves in situations where we don’t look up, we see only saturation, frustration. (more…)
